THE LITTER PROJECT IN ÃŽle-Ã -la-Crosse, Saskatchewan
In ÃŽle-Ã -la-Crosse, Saskatchewan, students participated in the Litter Project, a hands-on initiative by Volatus Education. Through this program, students used drones to collect aerial data, and how to use machine learning tools to develop algorithms to identify and categorize litter in their community as either plastic, metal, glass, or paper-based. Following this, they engaged in a community cleanup effort.
The Litter Project is a collaborative effort with the University of Manitoba aimed at developing a tool to detect and classify litter. This research holds promise for addressing litter pollution, particularly in coastal regions. Additionally, the project highlights the connection between community cleanliness and mental well-being.
