Over 200 Lives Saved and Counting:

How Lifeseeker Uses Cell Phones to Increase the Success of Search & Rescue Missions

Imagine This Scenario:

Your 79-year-old relative leaves your home after visiting for the evening and heads home. She doesn’t call to say she arrived safe and doesn’t answer when you call her. You call a neighbor, who says her car is not outside her house. The route she drove was through the mountains, you are concerned for her safety and call the police. They drive the route, but see nothing untoward, no broken-down vehicle. We can all imagine the worry at this stage.

This is a true story, with a happy ending, because the woman had a cell phone with her and Swiss Air Rescue Helicopters were equipped with Lifeseeker, a cell phone location device used for search and rescue.

Moutier, Switzerland

During the night of September 27, 2023, the Bernese cantonal police requested air assistance: a 79-year-old woman was missing in Moutier. The incident commander called in the Rescue helicopter; the crew were able to locate the woman’s phone during the search flight. With the help of the helicopter’s searchlight and the Lifeseeker – a device capable of detecting and locating a cell phone – the crew managed to locate something reflective in the forest. The crew informed the police and landed the helicopter nearby.

It turned out that the woman had rolled down an embankment with her car in Moutier and was stuck in her vehicle. After responding forces arrived, the unconscious, slightly injured woman was freed from the car by firefighters, received medical treatment and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

"Lifeseeker has helped our success rate improve drastically."

This is just one of over 200 success stories due to Lifeseeker. It is an airborne mission system that is changing the game in SAR operations by accurately locating missing persons through their mobile phones, even in areas with no signal.

Next-Level Efficiency and Versatility for SAR Missions

Lifeseeker’s impact on SAR missions is impressive. It maximizes mission efficiency by significantly reducing the time it takes to locate and rescue individuals in distress. This not only increases the chances of a successful rescue but also minimizes the risks faced by SAR personnel who are often exposed to dangerous conditions. Many of whom may have already worked long shifts prior to the call.

One of the key strengths of Lifeseeker is its versatility. It can be seamlessly integrated into various aerial platforms, from traditional piloted aircraft to cutting-edge UAVs or drones. This adaptability ensures that Lifeseeker can be deployed in a wide range of SAR operations, tailored to your specific needs.

We all have cell phones in our pockets, and now it could help save lives. And, thanks to an early 2023 FCC ruling, we now have permission to operate this technology in the US and Volatus Aerospace is delighted to be able to offer this life saving technology in the Americas.
