In this edition of Voices of Volatus, we introduce Erdal Ozturk, Regulatory Compliance Specialist based in our Vaughan office. During his nearly three years with Volatus Aerospace, Erdal has played an important role in translating complex aviation regulations into practical operational frameworks that support both today’s missions and the development of new RPAS capabilities.
With a background spanning aerospace engineering, flight operations, regulatory compliance and law, Erdal brings a multidisciplinary perspective to some of the most complex challenges in advanced aviation. From supporting high-risk SFOC operations to helping navigate Transport Canada’s recent Pre-Validated Declaration (PVD) for the Canary X4000-V2 PD and ARC-c approval for its DAA, his work helps create the regulatory pathways that allow innovation to move from concept to real-world operation.
In this Q&A, Erdal shares what drew him to aviation, why solving complex regulatory puzzles continues to motivate him and how collaboration across engineering, operations and regulatory teams is helping Volatus push the boundaries of what is possible in Canadian aviation.

What do you enjoy most about working with your team?
I love the shared commitment to innovation and safety across all our departments. Working alongside talented engineers, technicians, and operations personnel means every day brings new technical challenges. Translating complex regulatory standards into practical, safe operational frameworks for all our RPAS platforms, while supporting both ongoing operations and future development, is something we achieve together, and that collaboration is the best part of my job.
What is one project or accomplishment at Volatus you are especially proud of?
While our team has led many Canadian firsts by securing SFOCs for high-risk operations, I am particularly proud of our recent Transport Canada PVD approval for the Canary X4000-V2 PD. Navigating that extensive and challenging approval process to validate such an exceptionally designed RPAS platform was one of the most satisfying achievements for me.
What excites you most about the work you do?
I love the challenge of turning complex regulatory frameworks into clear pathways for innovation. The RPAS industry moves fast, and being able to secure approvals that push the boundaries of what is possible in Canadian aviation is what drives me every day.
What first sparked your interest in aerospace, aviation, drones, autonomy or technology?
I have been fascinated by aviation and aircraft for as long as I can remember. That passion led me to participate in various aviation projects during my university years and eventually start my career at one of Turkiye’s leading global aerospace companies. Working as an engineer on such advanced projects solidified my passion for flight and clearly defined the path I wanted to pursue in my career.
What skills or experiences have shaped your career the most?
What shaped my career the most is combining my background in systems engineering and compliance with real-world flight experience. Having served as a UAV pilot alongside holding pilot licenses under both EASA and Transport Canada (TCCA) gives me a unique perspective that bridges manned aviation safety standards with unmanned operations. This hands-on operational foundation enables me to prioritize safety at every stage and build practical, robust regulatory frameworks.
How would you describe the culture at Volatus?

Working across different departments feels like a seamless partnership where engineering, operations, and regulatory teams align to achieve ambitious goals. It is a culture that encourages excellence and empowers people to set new benchmarks in advanced aviation.

What’s something people may be surprised to learn about you?
While people are often intrigued by my combination of engineering and piloting experience, they are usually most surprised to learn that I also have a Master’s degree in Law. Having a background that spans aerospace engineering, active flight operations, and legal studies allows me to look at regulatory frameworks from every possible angle.
What is the best career advice you’ve received?
The best career advice I received was from my Master’s advisor, Dr. Emre Sümer, who taught me that true, unique value comes from combining completely different disciplines. He showed me that bridging distinct fields creates powerful leverage. Guided by this advice, I chose not to limit myself to a single domain, but to excel at the unique intersection of software, flight operations, law, and regulatory compliance for both manned and unmanned aviation.
